5 Nail Trends to Try Now

ADVERTISEMENTS
Purple Nail Polish
Jennifer Hudson accessorized her cute LBD with short, bright purple fingertips. If you're interested in playing with the shade, look for a version with blue undertones, like Hudson's, to keep you hands from looking cold.

Dark Taupe Nail Polish
At the Footwear News 24th Annual Achievement Awards in New York City, it was Blake Lively fingertips that made a statement. The complex rosy brown stood out just so against her tawny skin. Be sure to thoroughly buff your nail beds before applying such a dark shade. The roughed-up texture will give the polish something to adhere to--and make it last longer.

Baby Pink Nail Polish
To offset Kim Kardashian’s sexy statement outfit, the star chose a buff and understated pink for her fingertips. The shade is more accessible than plain white and works particularly well with bronze skin and short nails.

Nude Nail Polish
Can't quite see the tips of Heidi Klum's nails? That's exactly the point. The star turned to a warm, fleshy shade that matched her skin tone almost exactly. A neutral hue slims and elongates the fingers, and works as an elegant complement to a bold print.

Metallic Gray Nail Polish
A year ago, matte nails were all the rage. But as beauty mavens know, all good trends must come to an end. Take Vanessa Hudgens's ultra-shiny metallic gray fingertips. If you're ready to play with a highly reflective tone, take the time to first buff your nails and apply a base coat. They formulas are a bit more fussy than creamy hues and can chip easily without a bit of prep.

How to groom your toesnails?

ADVERTISEMENTS
Properly cleaning one's toenails is surprisingly important. The feet often travel bare on the ground and pick up germs, bacteria and dirt that get caught under the nails. If not cleaned properly, the toenails can discolor or get infections, making it embarrassing to wear flip-flops or walk barefoot in public. In order to avoid infections, groom toenails every week.

Things You'll Need:

  • Cotton ball
  • Nail polish remover
  • Salt water
  • Soap
  • Cuticle remover or olive oil
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Nail clippers
  • File
  • Buffer
  • Cotton socks

Instructions

  1. Remove any nail polish with cotton ball and gentle polish remover. Avoid rubbing too hard as this could cause nail scratching.
  2. Soak feet in warm, salty water to fight against any possible infection.
  3. Wash your feet with some gentle soap and warm water after a few minutes of soaking. Dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
  4. Dip a cotton ball in professional cuticle remover or olive oil and gently massage the toe until the cuticles are soft. Push cuticles back gently with cuticle pusher.
  5. Use toenail clippers to cut down toenails straight across. Be careful not to cut so far back that it exposes the skin underneath. Cut until the skin starts for shorter nails and just above the skin for longer nails.
  6. Use a clean file to file down any sharp edges. Use a buffer on tops of nails briefly to smooth down the nail surfaces. Don't press hard, which could damage the nail.
  7. Massage moisturizer into the foot and toes to keep skin soft and smooth.
  8. Wear fresh cotton socks to whisk away sweat and moisture all day to prolong good toenail health.
